The story of the film starts when Major Jai Bakshi ( Siddhartha Malhotra) hears something terrible and quit his job to take revenge on the people who don't deserve Indian Army.

• Bollywood Hungama

While the director Pandey tried to build on the suspense, he fails to keep the viewer’s attention because of it’s run time and clumsy writing. On the whole, AIYAARY misses the mark and is a huge letdown on the account of its flawed script and the lengthy runtime. At the box office, it will be a disappointing fare

Definitely, a must watch for the suckers of this genre. Neeraj Pandey draws some dots in the first half just to join them in the second. Manoj Bajpayee & Sidharth Malhotra deliver exhilarating performances. The movie has an important message to share, just hold your grip till the end.

Aiyaary, for which Pandey gets the story, script and direction credit, isn’t taut enough to qualify for an edge-of-the-seat thriller. Had the film been closely edited to make it pacy, it would have sent out the message it intends to. As of now, it remains as lost as the purpose behind some of the film’s long drawn chase sequences.

Aiyaary’s first hour is engaging because it gives us reason to assume that great twists and turns will unfold at any moment. That promise is unfulfilled in the remaining 100 minutes of the film. Pace and bluster cannot compensate for lack of substance. This wannabe James Bond flick is nothing but a blast of hot air.

You know where this ‘A Wednesday’ type common-man’s angst is coming from. You simply don’t know where the filmmakers intend to go with it. You’ll, of course, go to the theatre because of the director (Neeraj Pandey), who has solidly proven himself in the genre in the past (Special 26, Baby). To be fair, the film is shot with much flourish, set in London and Lutyens’ Delhi, over a chor-police kinda chase that works intermittently when the two lead characters meet.

As an earnest apprentice, Malhotra begins well but can’t hold on to it for long. Like most of the other actors, he too falls prey to a confused screenplay. Aiyaary is sketchily-written and not compelling. It tests patience even if you are a fan of the genre. It demands way too much endurance than what is left in you after watching Naseeruddin Shah’s bizarre monologue.

It’s an interesting film for those feel strongly for our army. And, of course Manoj’s performance should certainly not be missed. Manoj reaffirms why he’s one of the best actors in the country today. He seems to relish the character and that shows in his performance. He is simply brilliant in every scene.

Aiyaary starts with great promise because of the brand value of its filmmaker. I won’t deny that even Malhotra is earnest in his act and Bajpayee is near infallible. I was hoping for big twists, breakneck speed of narrative but this one is completely devoid of material and is thus a complete mood buster for any cinephile. There was so much to do with the story but weak writing can achieve little in times when the story is the star of every show.

For a film like ‘Aiyaary’, there is no scope for any music because of its plot but the film could have been better paced, all thanks to the under-cooked narrative. Aiyaary is a throw awayeffort from director Neeraj Pandey, where the only saving grace is Manoj’s act.

Aiyaary wants to be a daring thriller that calls out smarmy politicians and arms dealers. But it only fires blanks. It begins with a disclaimer that its storyline is strictly fictional and that it has the utmost respect for the political class and the military establishment. The film lives up to its word. At the end of all the sound and fury, the purported targets are left unscathed. Only one poor cornered ex-soldier puts a bullet through his throat.

If you are a fan of spy thrillers and Neeraj Pandey, you will have to stifle yawns while watching Aiyaary. However, if you appreciate the finer things in life like Manoj Bajpayee’s flawless performance, you must book your tickets to the film because the actor is at the top of his game here.
